The Medicinal Properties of Terpenes present in Cannabis Sativa

Cannabis is Chock Full of Medicinal Terpenes

It may not surprise you to learn that Terpenes, specifically those found in Cannabis Sativa as well as its close cousin Humulus Lupulus (HOPS) possess an incredible number and variety of medicinal properties, but what properties specifically?

According to the European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry and author of “Medicinal Properties of terpenes found in Cannabis Sativa and Humulus Lupulus.” Tarmo Nuutinen of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Eastern Finland says “they are many.” Tarmo Nuutinen points out that the Cannabaceae plants are rich in terpenes. Typically comprising nearly 5% of the female plants mass on a dry weight basis when inflorescence (flowering). Typically the majority of these terpenes are mono- and sesquiterpenes derived from two and three isoprene units, respectively.

Many of these terpenes are well known for their potential in biomedicine, and have been used in traditional medicine for 100’s of years. These include some of the most common and prevalent cannabis terpenes Myrcene, Caryophyllene, Limonene, Linalool, Pinene, and there are many more. In fact upwards of 200 unique terpenes have been identified in the cannabis plant.

Terpene Medicinal Properties

These Terpenes medicinal properties ar supported by numerous in vitro, animal, and clinical trials. They show anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, anticonvulsive, antidepressant, anxiolytic, anticancer, antitumor, neuroprotective, anti-mutagenic, anti-allergic, antibiotic and anti-diabetic attributes, among many others.

Tarmo Nuutinen goes on to stress that because of the very low toxicity, these terpenes are already widely used as food additives and in cosmetic products, proving their relatively high level of safety and tolerance.

If this information doesn’t surprise you then you are part of a growing number of people who have learned either first hand or through study the incredible potential of the cannabis plant for use in medicine.

I hope you have found this post both educational and entertaining. If you have any comments about this topic please leave them in the comment section below. I would also like to point out that all of the Terpene Profiles Dab Dabs has to offer are based on real world analysis of these incredible and unique strains of cannabis, and are comprised of the very same natural mono- tri- and sesquiterpenes mentioned in this scientific abstract.

Thank you for reading.
